What if fall guys Had an app?

Fall Guys Intro Img

Starting Point

Playing your favorite game with friends can be tricky

Although there are many multiplayer games out there, the number of games that are available to play physically with friends in the same room is quite low.

This project started from an idea I had while playing Fall Guys with a couple of friends.

We were at a house party and couldn't play together since it was possible for only one player to play at a time.

The pROBLEM

3 players Need 3 different consoles

It’s impossible to play Fall Guys with friends using one device and multiple controllers. My friends and I love this game and find this fact frustrating. This picture above is taken from Reddit, and shows we are not the only ones who struggle...

Research

68% of the players play with their friends

On top of that, 57% of them frequently meet their friends in real life, and 61% have played some kind of game at social gatherings. Having a game mode that allows play in these kinds of situations could be immensely beneficial to the game, as it will allow people to play together when they meet, encouraging more people to play

IDEATION

Could an app be a controller?

Using a phone instead of a controller could be uncomfortable: some people avoid downloading apps, some prefer a specific game style involves controllers, and some just don’t like to play on their phone. In my research, I learned it would probably be the best to include both of the options in the new game mode: controller and a phone.

In this case study, I’m gonna focus on the app.

Designing

How It Works

The good ol’ split screen method, but with a little twist. All you need to do is downloading the Fall Guys app to your mobile device, set it up and use it as your controller. Easy and handy, no other equipment required.

App Controls

Tap anywhere on the left area of the screen to create a movement joypad. The joypad follows your thumb for maximum comfor.
The bottom right area is for jumping. Tapping here makes you jump.
Tapping on the top right areamakes you grab. You can use your index finger to do so.
Swiping up in the bottom right area makes you dive. You can easily combo jumping and diving with a tap+swipe up combo.

Summary

There are a lot of questions in this concept that need to be tested

• Do users understand which tasks require them to use the main console and which should be done through the app?

• Would it be better to develop either an app or controller-based split screen, like other party games?

• In a large group, should there be an option to queue for the next game? Should it be win-based? (i.e., the winner continues to the next round to play against new players)

The concept allows players to play together from the same screen. I wanted to include both split screen and an app since it allows players to watch, which keeps those who won't get to play engaged in the game.
